So you are qualified but not getting through the interview process....

The picture is a representation of the interview process. This one includes testing. Each company you apply to will have a basic process similar to this one. How you process through it will be the key. Don't do the same things and expect different results, something similar my Dad always says.
Here are a few reasons you may not get past the first part of the interview screening process and how to change to put you in a better position.




  1. Poor grooming attire.
    • First impression factor. Please dress business or business casual. Only field that I know that does not have to dress this way for interviews is the Medical field. But still, if they did not inform you to dress in scrubs, white coats, or specific attire, please plan to dress business or business casual. 
  2. The inability to explain your experience and how you are qualified.
    • Relax. Practice telling a friend what your previous or current work entails. Explain how certain situations where you took the lead and fixed a problem. Write it out if you have to. 
  3. Showing no interest or lack of enthusiasm.
    • Smile. You have come as far as an in-person interview, you should be excited. Say it with a smile, it will make a difference.
  4. Showing interest in other positions except one interviewing for.
    • Let's make it through to the end of the interview before you start asking about other open positions or positions you have applied for. Keep those questions to a minimum. The company thought you were a good fit for the one you were interviewing for at that time. 
  5. Not knowing any information about the company.
    • Do your research before your interview. Go to the company's website, check out the About page, see if they have won some awards, and what interests you about the company.
  6. Interested in money, salary, hourly pay nothing else.
    • Pay is a factor but don't lead all your questions and answers about that. Set the tone with your experiences, skills, and qualifications.
  7. Negative feedback when answering questions about previous employers.
    • Try not to answer questions about previous employers with a negative experience. Maintain some integrity and show how you were a positive aspect to your previous employers. 
  8. No follow-up questions for the interviewers.
    • My rule of thumb is to be prepared with at least ten questions to ask. I guarantee they should answer most during the interview. Or you should have been intrigued with new information. Interviews are a two-way street. They ask most of the questions and you will have an opportunity to ask impertinent questions too. This may be your future place of employment so get to know some things. 😉
